OUR TOPIC & RATIONALE

" Low retention of child care workers has been associated with negative effects on children, such as decreased social competence and bonding with child care workers. "

- Casey J. Totenhagen et al. (2016)

Why Manpower Sustainability?

Striving to foster excellence, education is highly valued in an advanced country like Singapore. With the significance of education, the demand of educators are on the rise due to the increased number of preschool centers in recent years (Jing, 2016).

However, the attrition rate of educators contributes to a lack of trained educators and a high turnover rate. This may potentially leave a negative effect on the quality of preschool services. (Pek-Greer et al., 2016).

Within the six month internship experience in 3 childcare centers, it was observed that more than 10 educators left. With lesser manpower, the remaining educators have to divide the work among themselves, resulting in increased workload and stress.

Henceforth, inspiring the focus to be on manpower sustainability.

"The issue is not about recruiting educators but retaining them as there is a rising trend of educators leaving the industry within the first few years of working."

- Lynn Ang (2012)

"Educators leave the field due to wages and other working conditions, so it is important to figure out ways to keep them in the field to mitigate the shortage."

- Tisha Craig, 2017

Our Inquiry Question

What encourages educators to stay in the industry?

Through this project, our team aims to find out more about the needs of the center and tackle it with possible solutions.
