Oftentimes, I thought of how I would leave the Early Childhood (EC) industry due to the downsides it has - high workload but low wages, lack of work-life balance etc. Hence, I wanted to know "what causes educators to leave the EC industry" as I feel that it will help me the make the decision whether to continue in the EC industry or not.

At the beginning of the project, my group and I, believe that wages is pre-eminently the reason why educators leave. However, after interviewing the principal and more research, we found out that the substantial reason for the turnover rate in EC industry was stress due to heavy workload instead. Hence, we decided to change our focus from "what causes educators to leave the EC industry" to "what encourages educators to stay in the industry" despite the heavy workload and challenges faced.

Though it was kinda disappointing that it was a false start and numerous changes have to be made, I still think that the work done were not in vain. Firstly, it aided us in discovering the center's needs. And more importantly, it enlightened me that issues such as wages will not easily cause an educator to leave the EC industry as the fundamental reason of why one enters the EC industry is due to their passion/love for children.

Just like them, I hope that I’ll be able to chase after my passion to guide children and surmount challenges little by little, by putting in efforts to find solutions. I want to keep the quote below (given by a friend) close to me and start by finding out what can encourage me to continue in the EC industry despite the heavy workload etc.

You are a work in progress.

Which means you will get there a little at a time, not all at once.”
